Barely recovered from the acts of war and completely overwhelmed by the unprecedented economic crisis, Syria is facing a new disaster – a deadly earthquake. On February 6, 2023, at 4:17 am local time, residents within the greater Aleppo provinces were rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Later, it was followed by two more earthquakes, one with a 7.5 tremor, and continuing aftershocks.

Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community of Syria reports: “According to the latest data, the current number of reported victims of the earthquake in Syria has reached 538, the number of injured is 1353, and 120 buildings have been destroyed. In addition to human losses, churches, buildings, and institutions suffered extensive structural damage, some even flattened. Soon after becoming aware of the extent of damage in the city of Aleppo, the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church in Aleppo immediately acted to help the community. People gripped by fear and left homeless, rushed to the streets, and more than 350 families found shelter in the halls and courtyard of Bethel Church. The Armenian Evangelical Community of Syria, with the financial support of AMAA, and the encouragement of the Union of the Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East, was one of the first respondents to the disaster with direct material support and taking care of the immediate and basic needs, along with moral support and prayers.”

We pray that the resilient spirit of the community in Syria will once again prevail rising up from the depth of this latest calamity.

AMAA has been assessing the damages to our communities. We have been in touch with the leadership in Lebanon and Syria. AMAA has offered initial assistance necessary to cope with the situation and will continue to stay alert and vigilant as we receive more information.

AMAA Continues to Pray and Respond to the Earthquake Struck Community in Aleppo

As the number of the injured and victims of the deadly earthquake rises, the Armenian Evangelical Community in Aleppo, headed by Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria, continues to reach out and help the people with major support from the AMAA. The doors of the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church of Aleppo remain open to shelter and feed the homeless in its halls and courtyard and respond to the needs by providing them necessities, such as food supplies, coats, warm blankets, hygienic items, medications and other stuff. Currently, there are over 250 families sheltered in Bethel Church.

Rev. Dr. Selimian reported that the current number of injured people in Aleppo is around 2600 and the death toll is about 900. He emphasized that they will overcome these difficult days with the providence of God, and with the support of AMAA and other organizations.

Հազիւ պատերազմի արհաւիրքէն ուշքի եկած եւ աննախադէպ տնտեսական տագնապով ճնշուած Սուրիահայ մեր գաղութը կանգնած է նոր աղէտի մը առաջ՝ անողորմ երկրաշարժը։ 2023 թուականի Փետրուար 6-ին, տեղական ժամով առաւօտեան ժամը 4։17-ին, Հալէպի նահանգի բնակիչները ցնցուեցան 7.8 ուժգնութիւն ունեցող ահաւոր երկրաշարժով։ Աւելի ուշ անոր յաջորդեց եւս երկու ցնցումներ, որոնցմէ մէկը 7.5 ուժգնութեամբ, որուն յաջորդեց յաւելեալ յետցնցումներ։ Սուրիոյ Հայ Աւետարանական Համայնքի Համայնքապետ՝ Վեր. Դոկտ. Ցաւով կը յայտնենք, որ Հալէպի երկրաշարժէն զոհուած երկու անձերը՝ Միրնա Թէնեքեճեանը եւ իր որդին՝ Ալպերն են։

Syria Earthquake Update!

The Armenian Evangelical Church of Bethel, in Aleppo, Syria, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian President of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria, continues to render a range of services to all those who are affected by the earthquake and have found shelter within the Church premises. Along with Pastor Asadour Mncherian, Pastor of the Armenian Evangelical Emmanuel Church, as much support, both physical and spiritual, possible is being provided. The Pastors meet, talk and pray with individuals and families, and listen to their questions, difficulties and concerns for the coming days. The Church has also been organizing special programs for the children in the playground to keep them preoccupied and encouraged.

Rev. Selimian reports that some of these families will be able to return to their homes, but others will not. They are worried about the structural condition to their house or apartment buildings. Rev. Selimian with his team held a meeting with local construction experts, engineers and architects and created a special Task Force which will assess the damage to homes and buildings in question. Ultimately, a special report will be created to determine the extent of the damages – whether the buildings can be repaired or not, and whether they should be completely evacuated and demolished. They have also started to evaluate the extent of repairs of the damaged church buildings and schools, hoping that in a few weeks they can begin working on repairs.

AMAA Continues to Pray and Respond to the Needs of our Communities in Aleppo Affected by the Deadly Earthquake

The number of families seeking shelter in Bethel Church and other churches and centers is increasing. Upon inspection, many buildings are being categorized unsafe and uninhabitable, leaving people being forced to leave their home.

Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community of Syria reported that a building behind Bethel Church collapsed yesterday. Rev. Selimian with his team continue to do their utmost to shelter, feed and meet the basic necessities of these families currently living in the Church. On Thursday, February 10, the Consul General of Republic of Armenia, Mr. Papken Badalyan, visited and spent time among the people and expressed their solidarity during this hard time. “Armenia and Artsakh with their own challenges and hardship is always with us and shares our pain and sorrow” said Rev. Selimian. “And instead of us extending our hands to Armenia, Armenia is now extending its helping hands to us by sending special aid to Syria and officially handing it over to the Syrian government.”

Fortunately, the Kessab region of Syria (which was not directly on the earthquake line) was not affected as much. Tremors caused some damage to the area, including the dome of our Church.

This is the message that the Armenian Evangelical Community and the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church of Aleppo under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, is conveying to all affected by the deadly earthquake, some of whom have found shelter in the premises of the Church.

In his message during Sunday morning service, Rev. Selimian emphasized that “in our lives, storms and earthquakes will happen, but we should place our trust and faith in the Almighty God.” All who were present at the worship service experienced a stronger faith and commitment to cling to and trust God. Rev. Selimian also met with the Sunday School children, spoke with them, and encouraged them.

The AMAA continues to pray and actively respond to the needs of our communities in Syria who are affected from this devastating Earthquake.

Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian continues to serve, encourage, and inject hope to all those who are affected by the February 6 devastating earthquake

As the death toll and the number injured are rising every hour, the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church of Aleppo Syria, under the leadership Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria, continues to serve, encourage, and inject hope to all those who are affected by the February 6 devastating earthquake. Rev. Selimian reports that currently the death toll is about 1580 and the number of injured around 2500-2550. The number of those who are sheltered in Bethel Church is beginning to decrease little by little. Currently the number remaining in the Church is 150-200 as some of them are slowly returning home or to alternate residences. “We continue to serve them in the same way,” said Rev. Selimian. “Feeding, them, counseling and encouraging. At the same time, we are recording all the collapsed and damaged buildings. We are sending special surveyors to evaluate and give us direction on how and when the repairs can start. We are also in the process of repairing the damage to the schools and plan to resume classes on Monday. On one hand, we try to reduce the pressure on them, and on the other hand, we give them signs of normal life as a psychological transition for them to return from the state of shock to normal life.”

Rev. Selimian also reports that the condition of many affected buildings remains dangerous. The authorities have marked approximately 40,000 buildings in Syria as dangerous and uninhabitable and must be evacuated immediately, of which approximately 13,000 are in Aleppo and its regions. “Now we are facing another alarm,” said Rev. Selimian, “because people who thought that they would be able to return to their homes, it appears that they are not allowed to. And this puts another pressure and obligation on us – to find and rent houses to accommodate them. This is certainly not a natural process, because in three-room houses, 5-6 people are accommodated in each room, and this creates an unpleasant living situation.”

Վեր. Սելիմեան նաեւ կը յայտնէ մեզի, որ Սուրիոյ իշխանութիւնները մօտ 40,000 շէնքեր գնահատած է վթարային եւ անյապաղ անոնց մէջ բնակողները պէտք է դուրս գան իրենց բնակարաններէն։ Այս շէնքերէն շուրջ 18,000-ը կը գտնուի Հալէպի եւ իր շրջաններուն մէջ։ «Այժմ մենք կանգնած են մէկ այլ ահազանգի առաջ», ըսաւ Վեր. Սելիմեան։ «Մարդիկ, որոնք կը խորհէին թէ պիտի կարողանան վերադառնալ իրենց տուները, արտօնուած չեն վերադառնալու։ Եւ այս մէկը մեր վրայ կը դնէ մէկ այլ պարտաւորութիւն՝ տուներ գտնել եւ վարձել այս ընտանիքները տեղաւորելու համար։ Այս անշուշտ բնական ընթացք մը չէ, քանի որ երեք սենեականոց տուներու մէջ իւրաքանչիւր սենեակի մէջ 5-6 հոգիներ տեղաւորուած են, եւ այս մէկը անախորժ կենցաղային վիճակ մը կը ստեղծէ»։

6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Again Greater Aleppo Earlier Today

Today, at 8:04 pm local time, the residents within the greater Aleppo provinces, were rocked once again by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake and people gripped by fear rushed to the streets and tried to find shelter in churches, schools and other centers. A large group of them filled the halls and the courtyard of the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church, Aleppo-Syria. The Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria are doing their utmost to shelter and provide as much support, both physical and spiritual, as possible. Rev. Selimian reports that the rest of the damaged buildings are collapsing one by one.
