Remembering Hrant Dink
RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT OF CAMP ARMEN, WHERE HRANT DINK WAS RAISED PAVES ITS WAY
The Youth Home of Istanbul (also known as Camp Armen) in Tuzla, Istanbul, where Agos Newspaper Editor-in-Chief and journalist Hrant Dink grew up, received the unanimous approval from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council, hereby removing all zoning obstacles to rebuild the Camp by the Gedikpaşa Armenian Protestant Church and School Foundation.
The Camp, which was inactive, faced the danger of demolition in 2015, due to the fact that the deeds were not returned to the Foundation for years. During the time of resistance the Camp was guarded for days.
On October 27, 2015 the issue was resolved, when the original ownership of the title deed was returned to Gedikpaşa Armenian Protestant Church and School Foundation.
Unanimously, the function of the parcel as a “social cultural area” was changed to “special social cultural area.” With this change, the front of the building, that will be constructed by the Foundation, will be completely open and not excluded from the use of the public. Facilities such as public education center, social aid units, dormitory, nursing home, homes for the handicapped will be built on the land. (Translated from Turkish by Louisa Janbazian)

A BILINGUAL REFLECTION ON THE HRANT DINK AUDITORIUM

In the South-Western district of Yerevan, Armenia, there is a state-of-the art school building – the AMAA’s Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisian School. Walk through the bright hallways of that school building, go up to the third floor and open the door of the auditorium which is named after Hrant Dink, the co-founder, editor and publisher of the bilingual newspaper “Agos” in Istanbul. From all corners of that bright room, like a hospitable host, you will be greeted by the eternal traveler Hrant Dink, immortalized in large photographs depicting different moments of his life and publications about him in different languages. From all sides of the room, he ‘watches’ you with an optimistic smile of a man, walking in the true path.
The grand opening ceremony of the Hrant Dink Auditorium coincided with the graduating ceremony of the first graduates of Avedisian High School, which was held on June 23, 2017. There were 18 twelfth graders on the stage. The speaker of this occasion was Hrant Dink’s widow, Rakel Dink, who was specially invited to Yerevan to cut the red ribbon of the auditorium and was the first person to enter that room.
Since that day, this auditorium in Avedisian School serves its supreme purpose – to keep alive the memory of the great patriot through the students and alumni to go out and for the sake of the truth tell the world about a brave Armenian, who was martyred for the justice of the Armenian cause, who challenged “to take Armenian-Turkish relations out of a 1915-meter-deep well,” who in his speeches constantly raised the issue of the Armenian Genocide, who spoke about the need for freedom of speech in Turkey, and raised many topics and issues that were silenced or banned.
It is known to the whole world that Hrant Dink paid dearly for his uncompromising struggle. He was assassinated on January 19, 2007 right in front of his office. With Dink’s death, however, the soil of his struggle became even more fertile, with thousands of seeds sprouting in its furrows. Dink changed Turkey at the cost of his life. The day after his death, thousands of Turkish-Armenians took the streets with candles, flowers and his photos chanting “We are all Armenians, we are all Hrant Dink,” followed by thousands of demonstrations. After the assassination, Hrant Dink became a symbol of freedom for every person who stood up for his rights.
Dink’s legacy lives-on at Avedisian School. In the auditorium that bears his name, patriotic classes, meetings and discussions are held regularly and graduates take with them Hrant Dink’s spirit and ideas.

Հայաստանի մայրաքաղաք Երևանի Հարավ-Արևմտյան թաղամասում հառնել է մի գերարդիական դպրոցական շենք՝ ԱՀԱԸ հովանու ներքո գործող Ավետիսյան դպրոցը: Անցե՛ք այդ շենքի լուսավոր միջանցքներով, բարձրացե՛ք երրորդ հարկ և բա՛ց արեք Ստամբուլի «Ագօս» երկլեզու թերթի համահիմնադիր, խմբագիր և հրատարակիչ Հրանտ Դինքի անունը կրող լսարանի դուռը: Լուսավոր սենյակի բոլոր կողմերից հյուրընկալ տանտիրոջ նման ձեզ կդիմավորի հավերժի ճամփորդ Հրանտ Դինքը՝ անմահացած իր գիտակցական կյանքի տարբեր պահերն ու իրավիճակները պատկերող մեծադիր լուսանկարներում, իր մասին տարբեր լեզուներով արված հրապարակումներով: Եվ ամեն կողմից՝ լավատեսի ժպիտով, ճշմարիտ ուղով քայլող մարդու շիտակ հայացքով:
Հրանտ Դինքի անունը կրող լսարանի հանդիսավոր բացումը համընկավ Ավետիսյան ավագ դպրոցի առաջին շրջանավարտների հրաժեշտի հանդիսության հետ: 2017 թվական, հունիսի 23: Բեմում 18 տասներկուերորդցիներն են: Օրվա բանախոսն է հատուկ այդ առիթով Երևան հրավիրված Հրանտ Դինքի այրին՝ Ռաքել Դինքը: Եվ հենց ինքն էլ կտրում է Դինքի լսարանի կարմիր ժապավենն ու առաջինը մտնում սրահ…
Այդ օրվանից Ավետիսյան դպրոցի այս լսարանը ծառայում է մի գերագույն նպատակի. մեր աշակերտների, մեր շրջանավարտների միջոցով վառ պահել հանուն ճշմարտության և հայոց արդար դատի մարտիրոսված մեծ հայրենասերի հիշատակը, աշխարհին պատմել խիզախ հայորդու մասին, որ կոչ էր անում «հայ-թուրքական հարաբերությունները դուրս բերել 1915 մետր խորություն ունեցող ջրհորից», ով իր խիզախ հրապարակումներում, հոդվածներում և ելույթներում մշտապես բարձրացնում էր Հայոց ցեղասպանության հարցը, նաև խոսում Թուրքիայում խոսքի ազատության անհրաժեշտության մասին, բարձրաձայնում լռության մատնված կամ արգելված շատ թեմաներ:
Ամբողջ աշխարհին է հայտնի, որ Հրանտ Դինքը թանկ վճարեց իր անզիջում պայքարի համար: 2007 հունվարի 19-ին նա սպանվեց իր խմբագրատան առջև: Դինքի մահով, սակայն, է՛լ ավելի պարարտացավ նրա պայքարի հողը, որի ակոսներում ծլարձակեցին բազմահազար սերմեր: Իր կյանքի գնով Դինքը փոխեց Թուրքիան: Նրա մահվան հաջորդ օրը հազարավոր թուրքեր և հայեր մոմերով, ծաղիկներով ու նրա լուսանկարներով դուրս եկան փողոց՝ «Մենք բոլորս հայ ենք, մենք բոլորս Հրանտ Դինք ենք» կարգախոսով, հաջորդեցին բազմահազարանոց ցույցերը: Սպանությունից հետո Հրանտ Դինքը դարձավ ազատության խորհրդանիշ իր իրավունքների պաշտպանության համար ոտքի կանգնած յուրաքանչյուր մարդու համար:
Դինքի գործը շարունակվում է նաև Ավետիսյան դպրոցում: Նրա անունը կրող լսարանում պարբերաբար անցկացվում են հայրենասիրության դասեր, հանդիպումներ, քննարկումներ, և մեր շրջանավարտներն իրենց հետ կյանք են տանում Հրանտ Դինքի գաղափարներն ու ոգին:
The commemoration for Hrant Dink organized on every 19th of January, the day of his assassination, will be held online this year due to the pandemic measures
Hrant Dink will be commemorated on the 14th year of his assassination on January 19th. The commemoration that has been organized each year in Istanbul in front of Sebat Building, which used to house Agos Newspaper, will be broadcasted online this year due to the pandemic. In order to participate to the online commemoration you can visit www.hranticinadaleticin.org website on the 19th of January, Tuesday at 14.45 (GMT+3)* and can place your virtual banners.
The website will feature streaming about Hrant Dink throughout the day. Both the speech of Rakel Dink from the site where her husband was assassinated and the commemoration speech made on behalf of the Friends of Hrant Dink will be broadcasted on the above mentioned website. The 19th of January commemoration will be held online for this year only. Next year, Friends of Hrant Dink will continue being present at the assassination site in large numbers, will commemorate their friend and raise their voice to demand justice.
