The 175-year-old Armenian Evangelical Church’s Steadfast Path

During the development of the historical and cultural life of the Western European countries, when the transition from medieval culture to modern culture took place, a religious movement started in the 16th century in a number of European countries, known as the “reformation”. The reformation brought to the people both success and trepidation.

The “reformation” also had its effect on the Armenian people. “Reformation” in the Armenian reality was a period of awakening, which sought to improve the Armenian life spiritually through the concrete teachings of the Bible. The Armenian Evangelical Movement, born of the Armenian Church, had its unprecedented spread, especially in Constantinople in 1846, thanks to the dedication of forty founding men and women.

Passing the path of life and suffering from the past to the present, the Armenian Evangelical Church made significant contributions to the collective life of our people for 175 years through its influential role and charitable initiatives.

The Armenian Evangelical Church continues to provide permanent services in the Armenian ecclesiastical, national, cultural, educational and social spheres unconditionally, always having spiritual rebirth as the starting point, the primary importance of the educational upbringing of the new generations in order to have an educated and conscious youth. It also put special emphasis on the accessibility of the Bible to the people, and on charity, in line with the notion that each individual has to be a blessing and testimony to all.

The Armenian Evangelical Church is not just a structure. It encapsulates a set of spiritual values by taking on new circumstances and taking on new responsibilities according to the conditions of time and place. In addition to all the above-mentioned achievements, the essential and main goal of the Evangelical Movement is Christian education, for which the language of the church and the Bible became understandable. In other words, the church was put in the service of the people.

The Armenian Evangelical Church with its 175-year commitment stayed faithful to its mission. While facing various ideological, future, spiritual, and social challenges, it paved its pathway.

The calling that underpins our existence today is to preach the Gospel of salvation through the Holy Spirit, strengthening the legacy entrusted to us by our ancestors and creating a bright vision of the future through spiritual revival that invites each of us to self-examination and self-judgment, combined with the light of the Lord Jesus Christ and the guidance of the gospel.

No matter how many years pass, the Armenian Evangelical Church will continue to renew its covenant in the spirit of unwavering improvement and relentless innovation for the enlightenment and continuity of the Armenian nation.

ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆԵԱՅՑ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԱԿԱՆ ԵԿԵՂԵՑՒՈՅ 175 ԱՄԵԱՅ ԱՆԽԱԲԱՆ ՈՒՂԻՆ

Արեւմտաեւրոպական երկիրներու պատմամշակութային կեանքի զարգացման շրջանին, երբ միջնադարեան մշակոյթէն անցում կը կատարուէր նոր ժամանակի մշակոյթին, 16-րդ դարուն եւրոպական կարգ մը երկիրներու մէջ սկիզբ առաւ կրօնական շարժում մը, որ յայտնի է «բարեկարգութիւն» անունով։ Բարեկարգութիւնը մարդոց բերաւ ե՛ւ յաջողութիւններ, ե՛ւ տագնապներ:

Բարկարգութիւնը իր ներթափանցումը ունեցաւ նաեւ hայ ժողովուրդին վրայ: Հայ իրականութեան մէջ բարեկարգութիւնը եղաւ զարթօնքի եւ արթնութեան շրջանը, որ կը ձգտէր հայ կեանքը բարեկարգել հոգեւորապէս՝ Աստուածաշունչի առարկայական ուսմունքներով: Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ ծոցէն ծնունդ առած Հայ Աւետարանական շարժումը աննախընթաց արագութեամբ իր տարածութիւնը կ’ունենայ յատկապէս Պոլսոյ մէջ, 1846-ին, շնորհիւ օրհնեալ քառասուն հիմնադիր այրերու եւ կիներուն:

Անցեալէն այսօր, անցնելով կեանքի ու տառապանքի ճամբաներէն՝ Հայաստանեայց Աւետարանական Եկեղեցին ազդու դերակատարութեամբ եւ ազգօգուտ նախաձեռնութիւններով 175 տարիներու ընթացքին կարեւոր ներդրումներ ունեցաւ մեր ժողովուրդի հաւաքական կեանքին մէջ:

Ան անվերապահօրէն կը շարունակէ մնայուն ծառայութիւններ մատուցանել հայ եկեղեցական, ազգային, մշակութային, կրթական եւ հասարակական մարզերու մէջ: Միշտ ելակէտ ունենալով հոգեւոր վերածնունդը, նորահաս սերունդներու կրթական դաստիարակութեան առաջնահերթ կարեւորութիւնը՝ ի խնդիր ուսեալ եւ գիտակից փաղանգ ունենալու, Աստուածաշունչի մատչելիութիւնը ժողովուրդին եւ բարեգործութիւնը, որ համահունչ է աշխարհահայեաց հայ մարդու տիպարին՝ լուսաւոր օրհնութիւն մը ըլլալով անոր կեանքէն ներս:

Հայաստանեայց Աւետարանական եկեղեցին սոսկ կառոյց մը չէ։ Ան կը ներփակէ ոգեղէն արժէքներու մէկութիւն մը՝ ժամանակի եւ տեղի պայմաններուն համեմատ նոր հանգամանք ստանալով եւ նոր պարտականութիւններ ստանձնելով: Վերոնշեալ բոլոր նուաճումներուն կողքին, Աւետարանական Շարժումին էական ու գլխաւոր նպատակակէտն է հոգեւոր դաստիարակութիւնը, որուն համար եկեղեցիի եւ գիրքի լեզուն հասկնալի ձեւ ստացաւ: Այլ խօսքով եկեղեցին դրուեցաւ ժողովուրդի ծառայութեան մէջ:

Հայաստանեայց Աւետարանական Եկեղեցին 175 ամեայ իր յանձնառութեամբ, անխաբանօրէն եւ հաւատարիմ մնալով իր առաքելութեան՝ ժամանակակից պայմաններուն առընթեր, ինչպէս նաեւ ծառացող գաղափարական, ապագայի, հոգեւոր, հասարակական եւ ընկերային բազմաբնոյթ մարտահրաւէրները դիմագրաւելով հարթեց իր ուղին:

Այսօր մեր գոյութիւնը հիմնաւորող կոչումն է նախնիներէն մեզի վստահուած աւանդը ամրապնդելով փրկութեան Աւետարանը քարոզել՝ Սուրբ Հոգիով համակուած: Հոգեւոր վերազարթնումով կերտել ապագայի պայծառ տեսլականը, որ մեզմէ իւրաքանչիւրը կը հրաւիրէ ինքնաքննութեան եւ ինքնադատումի՝ զուգորդուած Տէր Յիսուս Քրիստոսի լոյսով եւ Աւետարանի առաջնորդութեամբ:

Որքան ալ ամեակները թեւակոխեն, Հայաստանեայց Աւետարանական Եկեղեցին աննահանջ բարեկարգութեան ոգիով եւ անթուլ նորարարութիւններով պիտի շարունակէ իր ուխտը վերանորոգել յանուն հայ ազգի պայծառութեան եւ յարատեւման:
