A message about St. Vartanantz Day by Zaven Khanjian, AMAA Executive Director/CEO

For I am not ashamed of the Gospel. Romans 1:16

In the history of nations, it is rare to find a reference to holidays that occurred 1535 years ago. Indeed, since 451 A.D., Armenians, without interruption, everywhere and unequivocally have commemorated the martyrdom of the Vartanantz heroes and the freedom of worshipping God secured by their unselfish sacrifice.

A glance at Armenian History since that battle “For Jesus and for the Homeland,” reveals that despite periods of relative sovereignty and freedom we have enjoyed, and despite the existence of prosperous and fertile communities away from the Motherland, we can comfortably cite that today’s Armenian Communities in the United States, have never had their match of religious, linguistic, cultural, economic and political freedoms. We live and enjoy such a blessed and gracious environment of laws, which Armenians living in the Middle East, Europe and not even Soviet Armenia ever enjoyed.

And yet… alas. In this unrestrained atmosphere of freedom, individually and collectively, how loyal have we been to the sacred covenant of Vartan and his cohorts? With the mindset of a slave, how many times have we considered it shameful to confess and proclaim Christ as the Lord and Savior of our lives? Enslaved in the complexity of submission, how many times have we felt ashamed to utter our God graced Mesrobian tongue, fearing that those who speak a different language in our surroundings will consider us less civilized?

Keeping a grudge with solidarity and as lover of divisions, we have opened another trench among us. While some only embracing “For Jesus,” indifferently abandon our God-given identity and the language and culture from where it flows. Others, embracing “For the Homeland,” rebuff that all national pride we cherish, enjoy and care for are the grace of Almighty God, who is worthy of all glory and honor.

Against the treacherous Persian armies armed to their brim and led by fearsome and frightening elephants, Vartan and his comrades were armed with their unshakable faith in the Creator and were filled with endless love for the Motherland. By their selfless sacrifice and ultimate martyrdom, our centuries-old sacred legacy, crowned by the freedom of worshipping Christ, is the key to freedom for chained souls and enslaved minds.

Free from all alien and foreign constraints, to reflect genuinely the character of a true Armenian Christian, do we have the need for new oppressors in our individual and collective lives?

As the Poet penned
“For Christ, For the Homeland,
Onward, cried Vartan’s order,”
The cry is for you and for me.

Let us follow the path of Vartanantz and walk on their track.

Բռնութեան Տակ, Ազատ՝
Ազատութեան մէջ, Ստրո՞ւկ

Վասնզի ես ամօթ չեմ սեպեր Աւետարանը։ Հռովմ. 1. 16

Ազգութիւններու պատմութեան մէջ հազուագիւտ են այն տօները, որոնց յիշտակումի կեանքը կ՚երկարի 1535 տարիներ։ Արդարեւ, 451 թուականէն ի վեր, Հայ ժողովուրդը առանց ընդհատումի, ամենուրէք եւ միակամ կը յիշատակէ մարտիրոսացումը Վարդանանց հերոսներուն եւ անոնց անանձնական զոհաբերութեամբ ձեռք բերուած Աստուածապաշտութեան ազատութիւնը։

«Վասն Յիսուսի եւ վասն Հայրենեաց» մղուած այդ ճակատամարտէն ի վեր եթէ ակնարկ մը նետենք Հայոց Պատմութեան վրայ, պիտի տեսնենք թէ Հակառակ հայրենի հողին վրայ մեր վայելած ինքնիշխանութեան եւ անկախութեան շրջաններուն եւ հակառակ բարգաւաճ եւ բեղուն գաղութներու գոյութեան հայրենի հողէն հեռու, կարելի է հաստատել թէ Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներուն մէջ ապրող այսօրուայ Հայ գաղութը չէ ունեցած իր նմանը մարդկային իրաւունքներ եւ կրօնական, լեզուական, մշակութային, տնտեսական ու քաղաքական ազատութիւններ վայելող նման մը։ Կ՚ապրինք ու կը վայելենք օրէնքներու այնպիսի օրհնեալ եւ շնորհեալ մթնոլորտ մը, որու նմանը չէ վայելած դժբախտաբար ոչ Միջին Արեւելքի, ոչ Եւրոպայի եւ ոչ իսկ Սովետական Հայաստանի մէջ ապրող Հայ ժողովուրդը։

Եւ սակայն… աւա՛ղ։ Ազատութեան այս սանձարձակ մթնոլորտին մէջ անհատապէս եւ խմբովին, որքա՞ն հաւատարիմ մնացած ենք Վարդանի եւ իր ընկերներու սրբազան ուխտին։ Ստրուկի հոգեբանութեամբ քանի՜ քանի՜ անգամներ ամօթ սեպած ենք Քրիստոսը մեր կեանքի Տէրն ու Փրկիչը դաւանիլ եւ յայտարարել։ Ստրկութեան բարդոյթին գերին դառնալով, քանի անգամ ամչցած ենք բառբառել Աստուածատուր Մեծասքանչը, վախնալով որ մեր շրջապատին մէջ տարբեր լեզու մը խօսողները նուազ քաղաքակիրթ համարեն մեզ։

Միաբանութեան հետ քէն պահած եւ որպէս բաժանումներու սիրահար՝ խրամատ մը եւս բացած ենք մեր միջեւ։ Մինչ ոմանք փարած միայն «Վասն Յիսուսի»ն անտարբերութեամբ կը լքեն Աստուածապարգեւ մեր ինքնութիւնը եւ անկէ փխած լեզուն եւ մշակոյթը։ Իսկ ուրիշներ փարած «Վասն Հայրենեաց»ին, կ՚ուրանան թէ անոնց գուրգուրացած, փայփայած եւ պահպանած ազգային բոլոր բարիքերը շնորհքն են Ամենակալ Հօր Աստուծոյ, որուն վայել է Փառք եւ Պատիւ։

Թանձրամորթ եւ ահարկու փիղերով առաջնորդուած եւ մինչեւ ակռաները զինուած պարսկական ճնշող բանակի մը դէմ հսկայացող Վարդան եւ իր ընկերները զինուած էին Ստեղծիչին հանդէպ անխախտ հաւատքով եւ հայրենիքի համար ամբարուած անսպառ սիրով։ Անոնց անսակարկ զոհաբերութեամբ եւ գերագոյն նահատակութեամբ դարերով պահուած մեր պապենական սուրբ ժառանգութիւնը, թագադրուած Քրիստոսը պաշտելու ազատութեան պսակով, շղթայուած հոգիներու եւ ստրկացած միտքերու ազատագրման բանալին է։

Ամէն տեսակ խորթ ու օտարամուտ կաշկանդումներէ ազատ՝ Հայ Քրիստոնեայի նկարագիրը հարազատօրէն ցոլացնելու համար արդեօ՞ք նորանոր Յազկերտներու կարիքը ունինք մեր անհատական եւ հաւաքական կեանքին մէջ։
